01

The challenge

Cervical cancer is one of the few cancers that can be eliminated, yet low-resource settings carry the heaviest screening burden. Pap-smear-based testing is invasive, unaffordable, and difficult to scale outside well-resourced systems.

UE Life Sciences wanted a wireless, battery-powered, AI-assisted mobile colposcope capable of capturing, annotating, and sharing high-quality cervical images inside a unified cloud platform.

02

What we built

  • Native iOS, Android, and web applications for clinicians and reviewing physicians
  • AI inference pipeline for magnified, auto-focused cervical imagery with uniform illumination
  • Cloud platform for image capture, annotation, reporting, and longitudinal follow-up
  • APIs and back-end shared with iBreastExam's proven architecture
  • Role-aware workflow for field workers, clinicians, reviewing physicians, and researchers
  • Design system tuned for low-bandwidth environments and non-specialist users
03

How we built it

The most valuable thing we brought was the architecture already hardened on iBreastExam. Reusing that foundation meant the client paid for specialised cervical workflow, AI integration, and clinical governance, not for re-solving known problems.

AI-assisted medical imaging is a category where nearly right is unacceptable. Evaluation harnesses came before model integration, clinician-in-the-loop review happened at every stage, and audit-trailed reporting was built from day one.

04

The outcome

cervAIcal is under active clinical trial across Latin America, Southeast Asia, and India — more than 1,200 scans and counting.

Early reads show the platform holding clinical quality while remaining usable by frontline workers who are not specialist colposcopists.
